For most people when they think of a greenhouse they are thinking about somewhere to grow plants that are usually only seen in the jungle and other very hot and humid environments but there are several types of greenhouse uses. Flowers, vegetables and fruit can all be grown under glass and a greenhouse provides the perfect conditions for starting plants from seed or cuttings and that can include some exotic plants which require a tropical environment.
First you must decide where to build your greenhouse and how large you require it to be. Location and orientation is important and depending on which part of the country you are in the general rule is to go for a spot that has abundant morning and evening sun though some plants may need to be shaded from the hot afternoon sun.
Next we must mmake a decision about what kind of greenhouse we plan to build. There are hot, warm and cool greenhouses but any of them can be detached, lean-to and ridge and furrow styles. For most of us the lean-to style is the most popular and convenient. Ridge and furrow styles are popular with commercial growers and the detached style is good for both home and commercial growers as it can be built to most any size and can stand on its own anywhere you want it. Sometimes, you'll see detached greenhouses attached to one another with passageways. No matter what style you choose, it is important to have the right sunlight, supplies and equipment.
Greenhouses are usually glazed with glass, fiberglass or plastic and each of these materials can claim its own advantages and disadvantages. Glass is traditional and weather-resistant. Fiberglass is even more durable and can stand up under severe weather conditions. If you choose fiberglass go for the highest quality to avoid discoloration. Plastic is becoming popular for home setups because it is inexpensive and traps heat effectively. Of course, you will also need PVC, wood and plenty of nails to construct a sturdy frame.
